1988 Chinese Wushu Team: Li Zhizhou Drunken Sword

I know nothing about kung fu beside the stuff from the movies, but what I do love about this performance is the storytelling through movements. It’s as if he is sent back in time to a war era and is retelling the story of the battles and spoils (when he drinks) through kung fu.

It feels like Kung Fu forms, how they are unique from Okinawan katas, is that they  are much more than just self-defense patterns. They are also a powerful medium of story telling and history one may find at the opera. It’s as if each form should be accompanied by a history lesson in order to grasp a sharper understanding of Kung Fu.

I would love to hear from any Kung Fu practitioners or historians.
